Why sleep evolves into strange shapes

Sleep has to coexist with breathing, predators, migration, temperature, social groups, and habitat. An ocean mammal cannot simply become unconscious and forget to surface. A flying bird cannot book a hotel over open water. The result is a collection of compromises that look bizarre only because human sleep occurs in a relatively safe box.

What this tells us about pets

Dogs and cats also sleep in multiple short periods, adjust to household schedules, and choose positions based on temperature and security. A pet sleeping more after an unusually active day may be ordinary; a sudden major change in sleep plus appetite, behavior, movement, or breathing warrants veterinary advice.
